A Poppy Is to Remember.

Remembrance Day coming and I had to educate myself about the meaning of this holiday for Canada and other countries that were directly involved in the First World War. How to talk about war and loss with pre-schoolers?

Luckily, we have lots of books available that approach themes like living in peace. Peace starts with us, like simply being nice to other children!

However, the main book of our day was the classic A Poppy is to Remember by Heather Patterson and Ron Lightburn.

I thought the vocabulary a bit advanced to the preschool age in some parts, but they did enjoy the pictures. Older children raised questions about where the soldiers go when they don`t return? It`s definitely a sensitive subject, but necessary. Especially to remember we still live in a world that unfortunately is not in peace.

During the Great War, red poppy flowers would give the soldiers hope about peace returning one day. It was beauty in a sad place and time. That`s why we have been seeing poppies everywhere! Especially poppies pin on our parents and friends jackets.

A Poppy is to remember those who fought and fight for peace, who got hurt, or who never returned home. A Poppy is to remember there is still hope for peace.

Let`s make our own poppies today?

The loved doing more poppies, even when we were playing outside.
